News
Sunday 28th August and the NCC were in Clonmel for their 6th and final Hotspot.
The convoy was released at 10am into broken cloud and a steady west north west wind.
Today would see the birds get plenty of wing time to the loft in the expected eta of around the 4 3\4 hour mark for the early contenders.
A nice crowd had gathered at the loft to watch the race and enjoy the banter that can be found here in the north west of the country.
Its always nice to see so many familiar faces as we must be doing something right or year in year out they always return. And of course its even better to welcome new faces especially as everyone at the lofts is treated as equals know matter how big or small your wallet may be. Lol.
Unfortunately I couldn't be there at the lofts today but was able to experience the race with the live streaming and I take my hat off to the man that got it running today as he is not really into computers more so the BBQ? Answers on a postage stamp if you know who?
Hopefully next week we will get a better view of the approach to the loft as the winner approaches the trap.
Coming up near the eta mark the crowd were getting anxious scanning the horizon when a nice big heavy shower came on soaking everyone who couldn't find cover.
Then,
a small batch of 7 birds were seen approaching the lofts with one some 200yards out on its own but unfortunately for its owner it wouldn't trap quick enough and got quickly swallowed up by the ones coming in from behind it and finished in 6th place.
First through the trap was the Blues Brothers of Scotland from Kilkaddy in Scotland, which wins the last of the Hotspot series for its owner and £150.
In 2nd spot is the local loft of Danny Dixon under the name of Ballymacaldric lofts. I wonder if its one of the Lambretch speedsters? This bird takes home £100 for Danny for second prize.
In third is the partnership of JHS who have been flying very well of late with their Team of Wayne Doonan bred entries. Winning the fancier £75 and I hear its pooled as well!
In fourth place taking the place of the Harmony loft venture goes to the entry of suaimhneas winning £50 for its gallant effort.
Taking 5th place is the entry for Ellie which was the bird that came on its own but failed to trap quick enough. It takes home £25 and in talking to the owner on the phone earlier he had told me he's a few quid on it for his daughter.
Hopefully if it comes next week out in front it will bang in through the traps.
It has been raining on and off at the lofts with heavy showers.
The youngsters certainly had to work today but this is what they needed before next weeks Grand Final from Rosscarbery a distance of some 265 miles to the NCC.
Here's hoping conditions for next Sunday will be perfect and that the birds experience a perfect race.
